Alien Arena - VR Arcade game
Our client wanted to make a simple VR Pong game that can be played in his VR Arcade as well as by anyone on the Steam platform. The original idea was simple, have a ball that can be bounced with the shield attached to the player ’s hands, and when a ball hits the wall behind a player the opponent scores a point. Be playable 2-4 players online and have a single-player mode against an AI.
We had two people on our team to work on the project. One of them was a senior Unity developer/programmer who did the gameplay, network coding, and project management, and the other one was our 3d artist who worked on shaders, effects, etc.
Soon we realized that this gameplay gets boring quickly so we started brainstorming together with our client and slowly added more features to the game. We added the gun into the other hand that you can shoot your opponent to shrink his shield with it. Powerups were also added which could give you positive, or negative effects when it hit by the ball (like ammo for your gun, shrink/expand your shield, fire a cascade of bullets at you or your opponent). Lasers spawning and moving through the play area are what players have to dodge. With these upgrades, the simple and boring game just become a rich, fun, and challenging game that we enjoyed developing. The final product made our client so satisfied that's why we have already started developing a new VR software, which we are planning together.
This new game will have a similar style to this one but with different gameplay logic and we will not only be targeting the PC VR (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index) but also Mobile VR (Oculus Quest 2) by using OpenXR.
